Malaria is not a unique military infectious disease, it is a major global health issue and, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) World Malaria Report, 216 million cases and an estimated 655,000 deaths occurred in 2010. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa where a child dies every minute from malaria, and the disease is responsible for approximately 22 percent of all childhood deaths.
